How Should a Rug Fit in a Room?

The answer is easier than you might think. Start by measuring the area where you want your rug. This measurement will give you a rough idea of the size you need. As we tell all our customers: Your house, your rules. Ultimately, you are the final judge of what looks good in your home. The following are suggestions from experts on how rugs should fit.

Dining Room Rugs

A good rule of thumb is to choose a rug that complements the shape of your dining table—the centerpiece of the room. To determine the right size, pull out the dining chairs so they are the same distance from the table as if someone were about to sit down. How do I clean synthetic fiber rugs? (Polypropylene, polyester, and acrylic)

Synthetic fibers are very smooth, meaning they show dirt more readily and may not hold dye as well, leading to fading. Regular maintenance can help mitigate these issues.

Quickly contain spills or accidents by blotting up excess moisture with a dry cloth or paper towel.

Cover the soiled area with a carpet or upholstery cleaner. We recommend using our Uni-Cleaner, which safely tackles tough stains (like juice, oil, ketchup, wine, coffee, or salsa) and repels future soil. After cleaning, your rug will be easier to maintain and remain soft.

Use an upholstery or kitchen brush to work out stubborn stains, and then dry the area with a cloth. If the rug is very damp, consider using a fan or hanging it to dry.
